Racecourse: Aintree Racecourse, Merseyside (near Liverpool)  |  Owner: Jockey Club Racecourses  |  Signature meeting: Grand National Festival โ€” three days in April  |  Other meetings: May meeting, October (Sunday), November (Saturday), December (Saturday), Boxing Day  |  Primary road access: A59 Ormskirk Road, M57 Junction 7, M58, M62 (via M57)  |  Nearest rail station: Aintree (Merseyrail Northern Line from Liverpool Central toward Ormskirk)  |  Distance from Liverpool city centre: Approximately 6 miles north

Aintree Racecourse sits in the northern Liverpool suburb of Aintree in the borough of Sefton, roughly six miles from Liverpool city centre. The course is best known for hosting the Grand National, the most famous steeplechase in the world, which runs every April as the climax of a three-day Grand National Festival. Grand National day itself is one of the largest single sporting attendances of the UK racing calendar and one of the busiest event days on Merseyside outside a Liverpool FC European fixture.

The road network into Aintree is the same suburban-Liverpool network that supports the surrounding neighbourhoods on non-race days: the A59 running north to Ormskirk, the M57 orbital motorway with its Junction 7 exit for the course, and connections onto the M58 and M62 for arrivals from further afield. TrafficVision aggregates live camera feeds from National Highways and Merseyside authorities covering all of these corridors. All 700+ Merseyside cameras are free to view, no account required.

Approach Corridors to Aintree

A59 Ormskirk Road

Feeds along the primary Liverpool-Aintree arterial

The A59 runs directly past the racecourse and is the main approach from Liverpool city centre, the Mersey Tunnels, and the L4 Anfield postcode area. Grand National day congestion runs from mid-morning until well after the last race.

M57 approach

Cameras on the M57 orbital

Aintree Racecourse sits on the A59 about one mile from the M57 and M58, which link the M62 and M6. The M57 is the primary motorway approach for spectators arriving from outside Merseyside, and slip roads back up hours before the Grand National.

M58 approach

Feeds along the M58 east of Liverpool

The motorway link from the M6 for spectators arriving from Wigan, Greater Manchester, and the north of England. The M58 meets the M57 for the final approach to Aintree.

M62 (via M57)

M62 corridor cameras

For arrivals from Manchester, Leeds, and the M6 south, the M62 to the M57 is the primary strategic route. J6 of the M62 links to the M57 for Aintree.

Aintree's approach is straightforward on paper โ€” one motorway junction and one A-road โ€” but the sheer scale of Grand National day (over 70,000 spectators on the Saturday alone across a rural-fringe suburb) overwhelms the local network for a predictable window each year. Live camera feeds help gauge how bad the M57 J7 slip road is before you commit to the drive.

Grand National Festival Traffic Pattern

The Grand National Festival runs three days in April (Thursday, Friday, Saturday). Saturday's Grand National is the biggest single day, drawing crowds that push the surrounding road network past capacity for a five-hour window either side of the race. The daily pattern:

  • T-minus 4 hours (10:00): A59 through Walton and Aintree begins slowing. Morning hospitality and Ladies' Day fashion arrivals fill hotels and pubs.
  • T-minus 2 hours (12:00): Peak inbound. A59 stationary in both directions. M57 J7 slip road backing up to the mainline. Aintree railway station platform congestion at Liverpool Central train arrivals.
  • T-minus 30 minutes (14:00): Racecourse gates near capacity. Traffic wardens managing residential parking on surrounding streets. Race-goers arriving after this point may miss the early races.
  • Grand National (post-race, roughly 17:30): Post-racing dispersal. A59, M57, M58, and M62 all congest simultaneously for three-plus hours. Sat-nav diversions push traffic onto residential Sefton streets that are not built for it.

The other Aintree meetings โ€” the May meeting, the October Sunday, and the November/December Saturdays plus Boxing Day racing โ€” bring smaller crowds and less dramatic congestion, but the same asymmetric approach problem applies.

Rail: The Practical Route to Aintree

Aintree railway station is on the Merseyrail Northern Line, running from Liverpool Central toward Ormskirk. The station is a short walk from the racecourse and is the primary transit option for Liverpool-side arrivals and for anyone arriving into Liverpool by long-distance rail. From Liverpool Lime Street (the main terminus for services from London, Manchester, and Birmingham), a connecting Merseyrail service via Liverpool Central reaches Aintree in under 30 minutes on a normal day. During the Grand National Festival, additional services run and platform staff manage the crowd.

Sandhills is another common transfer point where the Merseyrail Northern Line branches. Some spectators drive to a park-and-ride station further out on the Northern Line (Kirkby, Ormskirk, or Southport branches) and complete the journey by rail.

Parking and Local Access

Aintree Racecourse states that car parking "must be booked in advance". Access to the Steeplechase Car Park via the Melling Road course crossing closes 30 minutes before and reopens 30 minutes after the feature race, and no vehicle movement is permitted while the course crossings are closed. Post-racing dispersal onto the A59 takes hours rather than minutes.

Sefton Council publishes annual race-day road closures. For 2026, Melling Road closes from 07:00 Wednesday 8 April until 22:00 Saturday 11 April between Aintree Lane and Seeds Lane. The A59 Ormskirk Road closes between 16:00 and 21:00 on each race day (9, 10, 11 April) between Park Lane and Topham Drive, and Park Lane itself closes 16:00-21:00 on all three race days. A temporary bus stop and taxi rank operates on Park Lane from 15:00 to 21:00 each race day. The 2026 meeting also coincides with a Liverpool FC home fixture at Anfield on the Saturday evening, and ongoing National Highways works on the A5036 Dunningsbridge Road add pressure.

Weather and Cancellations

Grand National weekend in April can bring anything from sunshine to sleet. Recent editions have run in cold rain, snow flurries, and unseasonably warm sunshine within the space of a decade. Rain on the National Course affects the going (turf condition) and changes racing tactics but rarely stops the racing itself. Fog is the more common cancellation risk for the November/December Saturday meetings and Boxing Day racing.

Wet A59 sections around Walton have caused local incidents on previous race days. The live camera feeds show current road-surface conditions in real time, which is far more useful than the Met Office forecast when timing your departure.

Coverage Across Merseyside and Beyond

For broader coverage of the roads Aintree sits on, the England traffic cameras guide covers the M57, M58, and M62 network in detail. For the country-level directory, see United Kingdom traffic cameras. If your Grand National weekend also includes a Liverpool FC fixture, the new Anfield live cameras guide covers the same Merseyside road network from a matchday-Liverpool angle. For a comparable major UK sporting-event traffic pattern, see the new Ascot Racecourse live cameras guide for the flat-racing equivalent.

Are there live traffic cameras near Aintree Racecourse?

Yes. TrafficVision aggregates feeds from National Highways and Merseyside authorities covering the A59 Ormskirk Road, the M57 at Junction 7, the M58 approach from the M6, and the M62 corridor. All 700+ Merseyside cameras are free to view with no account required.

When is the Grand National each year?

The Grand National Festival runs annually over three days in April โ€” Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Saturday's Grand National is the biggest single day of the meeting. Grand National day is one of the largest single sporting attendances on the UK calendar and drives predictable heavy congestion on the A59 and M57 for a five-hour window either side of the race.

What is the best way to get to Aintree for the Grand National?

Rail is the practical option. Aintree railway station sits on the Merseyrail Northern Line running from Liverpool Central toward Ormskirk, and is a short walk from the racecourse. From Liverpool Lime Street (the main long-distance terminus), a connecting Merseyrail service via Liverpool Central reaches Aintree in under 30 minutes on a normal day. During the Grand National Festival, Merseyrail runs a seven-and-a-half-minute frequency of service between Liverpool city centre and Aintree station, with additional platform staff managing the crowd. If you drive, expect several hours of post-racing dispersal congestion on the A59 in every direction.

Which motorway junction is closest to Aintree?

The M57 Merseyside orbital serves Aintree. Junction 7 is the designated Aintree exit and the primary motorway access for spectators arriving from outside the immediate Liverpool area. For arrivals from further afield, the M58 (from the M6 north) or the M62 (from Manchester and the M6 south) both connect to the M57 for the final approach.

Are there other race meetings at Aintree besides the Grand National?

Yes. Aintree also hosts a May meeting, a Sunday in October, a Saturday in November, and Saturday and Boxing Day racing in December. These smaller meetings draw fractions of the Grand National attendance and cause noticeably less traffic disruption, but the same A59 and M57 J7 approach network applies.
