Alexandra Palace opened in 1873 on a hilltop in north London, burned down two weeks later, and reopened in 1875 after rebuilding. It has been owned since 1980 by the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust, with the London Borough of Haringey acting as trustee. The building isn't one venue but several: the 10,250-capacity Great Hall, the smaller West Hall and Palm Court, a Theatre, and an ice rink, all inside one Grade II listed building with its own park.

That range is what makes Ally Pally different from a purpose-built arena. In the same calendar year it can host a stadium-scale gig in the Great Hall, a trade exhibition in the West Hall, and the World Darts Championship spanning both December and January. Each pulls a different crowd on a different schedule, and the road and rail network around the park has to absorb all of it.

Event-Day Traffic: Two Very Different Patterns

A single concert night and a three-week darts tournament stress the roads around Ally Pally in different ways, and it's worth telling them apart.

A concert or one-off event behaves like most arena nights: a single surge inbound in the two to three hours before doors, and a single surge outbound after the show, concentrated on Alexandra Palace Way, Wood Green High Road, and the Alexandra Palace station approach.

The World Darts Championship is a different shape entirely. It runs for roughly three weeks from mid-December into early January, with two sessions most days (afternoon and evening), so instead of one peak night there are dozens of smaller peaks spread across the holiday period. Haringey Council has issued separate temporary traffic orders for Alexandra Palace's summer event series and for individual event days, closing sections of Palace Gates Road and Station Road N22 and suspending parking bays for the duration, with diversions signed locally.

Rail, Tube, and Parking

Alexandra Palace station is the headline fact for getting here: it sits at the Wood Green entrance to the park, effectively on-site. Great Northern runs a regular direct service from Moorgate via Highbury & Islington, plus a service to and from King's Cross (changing at Finsbury Park). On major event days, a free shuttle bus supplements the walk from the station gate to the venue entrances.

Wood Green (Piccadilly line) is the nearest Tube station, roughly 20 minutes from Piccadilly Circus. The W3 bus runs from Finsbury Park and Tottenham to the Alexandra Palace Ice Rink and Palm Court entrances.

On-site parking is split across three named car parks: East Court, open 05:30 to 00:30 with earlier last entry on event days; Grove, open 06:00 to 19:00; and Paddocks, which opens for specific events only. The first 30 minutes is free, then a barrier-free ANPR system charges £2.20 per hour (Paddocks is £5/hour from 17:30 to midnight on event days). Blue Badge holders park free and can scan their badge on-site. Alexandra Palace's own guidance is blunt about big events: on-site parking fills quickly, so public transport is the more reliable option when a major session or concert is scheduled.

The World Darts Championship

Alexandra Palace has hosted the PDC World Darts Championship every year since December 2007, and the PDC and the venue extended that partnership through at least 2031. The most recent edition ran from 11 December 2025 to 3 January 2026 in the West Hall, its 19th year at Ally Pally and its last in that room: from the next edition, running 10 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, the tournament moves into the larger Great Hall. That move lifts per-session capacity above 5,000 and total attendance across the three-week event to roughly 180,000, according to Alexandra Palace's own announcement.

Sessions typically run twice a day, early afternoon and evening, with a short break around Christmas Day and Boxing Day before the tournament resumes for the final rounds into the new year. Because it spans the holiday period, expect the surrounding roads and rail service to also be carrying general Christmas and New Year travel on top of tournament crowds.

Concerts and Exhibitions

Outside darts season, the Great Hall and West Hall run a year-round calendar of touring concerts, comedy, and trade exhibitions, plus recurring outdoor events like fireworks displays in the park. Haringey Council publishes a temporary traffic order for each of these, closing specific roads for the day rather than running the multi-week scheme used for darts. Weather and Event Timing

Alexandra Palace sits on high ground, and its outdoor spaces (the park, the terraces, the boating lake area) are more exposed to wind and rain than an indoor-only venue. Winter darts sessions and any outdoor fireworks or festival dates are the most weather-sensitive on the calendar.
