Amalie Arena is the downtown Tampa home of the Tampa Bay Lightning, opened in 1996 and known through the years by several names (the Ice Palace, then the St. Pete Times and Tampa Bay Times Forum, then Amalie Arena, and most recently renamed Benchmark International Arena in 2025). Most fans still search for it as Amalie Arena. It holds 19,092 for hockey and up to 21,500 for concerts, is owned by Hillsborough County and operated by Jeff Vinik's group, and is home to a Lightning franchise with three Stanley Cups and one of the longest home sellout streaks in the NHL. It anchors the Channel District and the sprawling Water Street Tampa development.

For traffic, the arena sits at the edge of a dense, walkable downtown district rather than a suburban parking sea, and it has no on-site parking. It is reached off I-275, I-4, and the Selmon Expressway, all converging on the congested downtown Tampa interchange. Approach Corridors to Amalie Arena

Because the downtown Tampa interchange (where I-275 meets I-4) carries roughly 200,000 vehicles a day and is under long-term reconstruction, the interstate cameras are the most useful check before an event-night drive. On a Lightning night, the I-275 and Selmon approaches are where the queues build.

Transit: The Free Streetcar

Amalie Arena has an unusually convenient transit option: the TECO Line Streetcar, which is free to ride and has a station right next to the arena (now signed for the arena's new name). The heritage streetcar line connects downtown Tampa, the Channel District, and Ybor City, running frequently, with extended hours on Lightning game nights and weeknight arena events. HART buses serve downtown, with the Marion Transit Center as the hub.

Because the arena was built into a walkable, transit-oriented district rather than around parking, the free streetcar plus the Water Street and Channelside garages is often the smoother way in than driving and hunting for a space downtown. Parking and Water Street

Unlike most NHL arenas, Amalie Arena has no dedicated on-site parking lot. It relies on the surrounding Channel District and Water Street garages, including the Pam Iorio Garage (formerly the South Regional Garage) a few minutes' walk away, plus port and Channelside garages within walking distance. Water Street Tampa, the large downtown development wrapped around the arena, is deliberately built for walking and transit rather than driving, so the garages plus the free streetcar are the practical combination. During Gasparilla, Tampa's annual pirate festival, the arena's associated lots become public event parking, one of the busier downtown weekends of the year.

Tampa's Sports Venues

Amalie Arena is one of three major Tampa Bay venues within easy reach of each other. Raymond James Stadium (the Buccaneers) sits a few miles west, and Tropicana Field is across the bay in St. Petersburg via the I-275 Howard Frankland Bridge. All share the same regional interstate network, so a Lightning game overlapping with a Bucs game or a bay-area event compounds traffic across the metro. On those days, checking the wider I-275 corridor is worthwhile.
