Race-Day Road Closures
The marathon closes streets in stages as the field moves around the loop, generally from before dawn through mid-afternoon. Grant Park and the immediate Loop close earliest and reopen last.
Closure Pattern by Area
- Grant Park / Columbus Drive — Closed from very early morning through evening (start and finish)
- Loop surface streets — Closed through the morning as the field passes
- North Side (Lincoln Park, Lakeview) — Closed mid-morning
- West Loop / United Center area — Closed late morning
- Pilsen, Chinatown, Bronzeville — Closed late morning into early afternoon
- Michigan Avenue finish stretch — Closed through mid-afternoon
- Lake Shore Drive — Remains open but carries heavy diverted traffic
Do not plan to drive through or across the Loop on marathon morning. The course is a closed loop around downtown, so there is no clean east-west or north-south surface route through it until the field clears. The CTA is the practical answer on race morning. The 'L' runs above and below the closed streets, so it is largely unaffected by the course:
- Grant Park start and finish: Red, Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Pink and Purple lines all reach the Loop within a short walk
- Lincoln Park and Lakeview miles: Red and Brown lines run parallel to the northern portion of the course
- Pilsen and Chinatown miles: Pink Line to 18th Street, Red Line to Cermak-Chinatown
- United Center / West Loop miles: Green and Pink lines to Ashland
Metra brings spectators in from the suburbs to the downtown terminals, all within walking distance of the finish area.
Plan departures around the field, not the clock
The course reopens progressively behind the runners, so the useful question is not "what time is it" but "where is the field." Elite runners finish a little after 9:30 AM; the bulk of the field crosses through the early afternoon. Streets behind the last runners reopen well before the ones ahead of them.
