Circuit: Circuit of the Americas, 9201 Circuit of the Americas Blvd, Austin, TX 78617  |  Capacity: 120,000 permanent; over 150,000 attended race Sunday in October 2022, with roughly 440,000 across the full weekend  |  Owner: Circuit of the Americas LLC  |  Opened: 21 October 2012  |  Grand Prix Circuit: 3.426 miles, 20 turns  |  NASCAR Circuit (2025+): 2.400 miles, 17 turns  |  Primary uses: F1 United States Grand Prix, MotoGP (United States motorcycle Grand Prix from 2026), NASCAR Cup Series, FIA WEC Lone Star Le Mans, concerts at Germania Insurance Amphitheater  |  Primary road access: SH-130 Exit 451 (Elroy Rd) and Exit 453 (FM 812) — the only two SH-130 access points; TX-71 from Houston/Bastrop  |  Distance from downtown Austin: Roughly a 20-minute drive  |  On-site parking: Lots A, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, L, N, R, S, T plus McAngus — all require a pre-purchased pass

Circuit of the Americas opened in October 2012 as the first purpose-built Formula 1 facility in the United States, roughly 20 minutes southeast of downtown Austin. It has hosted the F1 United States Grand Prix every year since (with a 2020 COVID gap), plus MotoGP, the NASCAR Cup Series, and FIA World Endurance Championship rounds. The Grand Prix Circuit runs 3.426 miles across 20 turns; the NASCAR configuration uses a shorter 2.400-mile, 17-turn layout.

Here is the fact that shapes everything about getting there: the SH-130 tollway has exactly two access points serving the circuit — Exit 451 (Elroy Road) and Exit 453 (FM 812). Two exits, for a venue that drew over 150,000 people on race Sunday in 2022 and roughly 440,000 across the weekend. That constraint is why COTA assigns your route by which lot you bought rather than letting you pick.

TrafficVision aggregates live camera feeds from TxDOT and DriveTexas covering SH-130, TX-71, I-35, and the Austin-area network. All 1,400+ Texas cameras are free to view, no account required.

Approach Corridors to COTA

SH-130 Exit 451 (Elroy Road)

The primary circuit access cams

One of only two SH-130 exits serving COTA. Serves Lots L, R, and S plus the C/D/E/F/G/H/K cluster via COTA Blvd. The Elroy Rd / FM 812 intersection is the major choke point for both ingress and egress.

SH-130 Exit 453 (FM 812)

The second circuit access cams

The other SH-130 exit. Serves Lots A, N, and T. When Elroy backs up, this is the alternative — but it is feeding the same intersection.

TX-71

Houston and Bastrop approach cams

The eastern approach. Drivers from Houston and Bastrop take TX-71 west to Kellam Road or TX-21 west rather than using SH-130. Also the route from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

I-35 and TX-45

Southern approach cams

Drivers from San Antonio, San Marcos, and New Braunfels take I-35 north to Exit 223A for TX-45 east (toll), then SH-130 to Exit 451 or 453.

COTA's own directions route you by origin: Austin and Dallas traffic takes TX-130 south to Exit 451; San Antonio and the south takes I-35 north to TX-45 east then SH-130; Houston and Bastrop comes in on TX-71 west.

Parking: Your Lot Determines Your Route

Every on-site space requires a pre-purchased pass. COTA states plainly that "all cars parking on-site require a pre-purchased parking pass for admittance onto COTA Blvd." Lots open one hour before gates.

The lot-to-route mapping is the important part:

Lots Use this exit
L, R, S Elroy Road (Exit 451)
A, N, T FM 812 (Exit 453)
C, D, E, F, G, H, K Elroy Road or the COTA Blvd main entrance

Rideshare is not permitted on COTA Blvd during race weekends. Rideshare operates from the McAngus Lot, with a complimentary tram to the Ticketmaster Box Office near Grand Plaza.

Infrastructure has been improved around the choke point: Elroy Road north of the circuit was widened to five lanes in 2022, a dedicated bus lane was created on Elroy Road, and rideshare pickup and dropoff were moved away from the main entrance.

CapMetro Shuttles — the Real Alternative

CapMetro runs the official shuttle to COTA, and their pitch is blunt: "Skip the traffic. Skip the parking. Just ride."

The main hub is Waterloo Park downtown on Red River Street, next to the Moody Amphitheater. CapMetro routes 2, 5, 7, 10, and 837 feed the hub — Route 837 every 15 minutes, the rest every 30.

Connection times from Park & Ride sites to the shuttle hub:

  • Triangle — 33 minutes
  • South Congress — 37 minutes
  • Westgate Transit Center — 47 minutes
  • North Lamar Transit Center — 50 minutes
  • Howard Station — 55 minutes (via Rail)
  • Southpark Meadows — 60 minutes

A second shuttle hub operates from the Travis County Expo Center in northeast Austin, near the US 290 / US 183 / SH-130 junction, with a free parking lot. Shuttle passes must be pre-purchased and frequently sell out.

Race-Weekend Traffic Pattern

The F1 United States Grand Prix runs across three days — Friday practice, Saturday qualifying, Sunday race — with the largest crowd on Sunday. Roughly 440,000 attend across the weekend.

The Elroy Road / FM 812 intersection is the constraint at both ends of every session. Ingress builds through the morning; egress is compressed into the window immediately after the chequered flag, when 150,000-plus people try to reach two highway exits simultaneously.

MotoGP (the United States motorcycle Grand Prix from 2026, previously the Grand Prix of the Americas) is the second-biggest weekend. NASCAR Cup Series and FIA WEC rounds draw smaller crowds with correspondingly lighter pressure on the SH-130 exits — check the live cameras an hour before setting off rather than three.

Concerts and Other Events

COTA is not just a racing circuit. The Germania Insurance Amphitheater on-site holds up to 14,000 with 5,240 permanent reserved seats, hosting touring acts year-round. COTALAND, an on-site amusement park, adds another traffic generator.

Amphitheater nights are a fraction of a race weekend in scale, but they use the same two SH-130 exits — worth a camera check on a concert evening that coincides with Austin rush hour.

Weather and Season Timing

The F1 US Grand Prix runs in October, typically warm and dry but occasionally hit by Texas storm systems — the 2015 race weekend was severely disrupted by rain. Rain doesn't just affect the racing; it slows SH-130 egress and turns the grass overflow parking areas into a problem.

The live camera feeds show current road-surface conditions in real time, which matters more than the forecast when you're deciding whether to leave the circuit immediately or wait out the queue.

Coverage Across Austin and Texas

For broader coverage of the roads into COTA, our Austin traffic cameras guide covers the metropolitan network and the Texas traffic cameras guide covers the wider TxDOT camera set. If you're flying in, the AUS Austin airport traffic cameras guide covers the TX-71 corridor — the same road that serves COTA from the east. For Austin's other big event-traffic generator, see the Austin City Limits traffic cameras guide. For comparable motorsport venues, see Silverstone Circuit live cameras and the Las Vegas F1 traffic cameras guide.

Are there live traffic cameras near Circuit of the Americas?

Yes. TrafficVision aggregates feeds from TxDOT and DriveTexas covering SH-130 (including the Exit 451 Elroy Road and Exit 453 FM 812 approaches), TX-71 from Houston and Bastrop, I-35 and TX-45 from San Antonio, and the wider Austin network. All 1,400+ Texas cameras are free to view with no account required.

Which exit should I use for COTA?

It depends on which lot you bought — COTA assigns routes by lot rather than letting drivers pick, because SH-130 has only two access points serving the circuit. Lots L, R, and S use Elroy Road (Exit 451). Lots A, N, and T use FM 812 (Exit 453). Lots C, D, E, F, G, H, and K use Elroy Road or the COTA Blvd main entrance. Every on-site space requires a pre-purchased pass — COTA does not admit cars onto COTA Blvd without one.

Can I take a rideshare to COTA?

Not to the main entrance. Rideshare vehicles are not permitted on COTA Blvd during race weekends. Rideshare operates from the McAngus Lot instead, with a complimentary tram to the Ticketmaster Box Office near Grand Plaza. Rideshare pickup and dropoff were deliberately moved away from the main entrance as part of the traffic-flow improvements that also widened Elroy Road to five lanes in 2022 and added a dedicated bus lane.

What is the best way to get to the F1 US Grand Prix without driving?

CapMetro runs the official shuttle service. The main hub is Waterloo Park downtown on Red River Street, fed by CapMetro routes 2, 5, 7, 10, and 837. A second hub operates from the Travis County Expo Center in northeast Austin with free parking. Connection times from Park & Ride sites to the Waterloo hub range from 33 minutes (Triangle) to 60 minutes (Southpark Meadows). Shuttle passes must be pre-purchased and frequently sell out.

How many people attend the F1 US Grand Prix at COTA?

COTA has 120,000 permanent capacity, but over 150,000 spectators attended race Sunday in October 2022, with roughly 440,000 across the full three-day weekend. That volume funnelling through just two SH-130 exits — Exit 451 (Elroy Road) and Exit 453 (FM 812) — is why the Elroy Road / FM 812 intersection is the major choke point for both arrival and departure, and why checking live cameras before you commit to an exit is worth the thirty seconds.
