Donington Park is a historic motor racing circuit near Castle Donington in Leicestershire, in the heart of the East Midlands. Run by MotorSport Vision, it opened in 1931, reopened in 1977 after wartime closure, and hosts around 60 race days a year, headlined by British Superbikes, with a motorsport heritage that includes MotoGP and the 1993 European Grand Prix. Once a year the circuit and its surrounding grounds also host Download Festival, one of the UK's biggest rock and metal festivals, each June. The circuit has a capacity of around 120,000, and East Midlands Airport sits right next to it, about five minutes from the main entrance.

Transit: East Midlands Parkway

The nearest railway station is East Midlands Parkway on the Midland Main Line, about 15 minutes from the circuit's main entrance by taxi, with services to Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Sheffield, and London St Pancras. For race days the circuit has a bus stop at its East Entrance served by local Skylink and MY15 routes. For Download, festival transfer buses run from East Midlands Parkway (around 20 minutes) and from Derby station (around 30 minutes) to a dedicated transport hub, and a coach operator serves direct pick-ups from more than a hundred UK locations. Rail plus a transfer bus avoids the A453 crush entirely.

Race Days and Download

Donington Park's traffic comes in two very different shapes. Across the season, roughly 60 race days, led by British Superbikes and historic racing, bring steady motorsport crowds that arrive and leave in a day. Then each June, Download Festival brings a camping crowd in the tens of thousands to the grounds around the track for a single long weekend, the biggest traffic spike of the year, with car park passes bought in advance and dedicated pick-up and drop-off near the East Entrance. For either, the A453 approach off the M1 is the pinch point, so the motorway cameras are the fastest way to read conditions before you join.
