Two Grounds, One Site

Headingley Stadium is not one venue. It is a shared complex on the northwest edge of Leeds holding two separate, adjacent stadia with a common stand between them. Headingley Cricket Ground, on the northern side, is the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and a regular England men's Test match venue, most recently hosting England v India in June 2025. Yorkshire CCC has owned the ground outright since buying it in 2006.

AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium, on the southern side, is home to Leeds Rhinos rugby league club and has carried its current sponsored name since a 15-year naming-rights deal with AMT Auto took effect in December 2023. Rugby union once played here too: Leeds Tykes, later renamed Yorkshire Carnegie, were tenants for years but left Headingley in 2020 after relegation made the ground's rent unaffordable, and the club has not returned.

Named Approach Corridors

Test Match Days vs. Rugby League Matchdays

The two tenants produce very different traffic patterns.

Cricket Test matches run over four or five consecutive days, with each session starting around 11:00am. Arrivals are spread across a longer morning window than a single kickoff, but a full day's crowd of up to 17,000 still converges on Kirkstall Lane and the surrounding streets by mid-morning, and the same volume disperses in a shorter window after the close of play, typically around 6:00pm.

Leeds Rhinos rugby league matchdays are a single-day surge. Car parking is not offered to the general public at all on matchdays, so almost all traffic pressure lands on the approach roads, drop-off points, and nearby residential streets rather than a stadium car park. For a sold-out Super League fixture or a marquee event like the 2025 Rugby League Ashes Test, bollards restrict through traffic at Gate B, Gate E and Newport View from roughly 1:45pm to 2:30pm and again from 3:50pm to 4:50pm around kickoff and full-time, with a pre- and post-match closure on St Michael's Lane itself.

Getting There by Train and Bus

Burley Park station, on the Harrogate Line, is the closest stop to the stadium complex at a five-minute walk, with a half-hourly service to and from Leeds City Station. Headingley station, on the same line, is a ten-minute walk (slightly uphill from the platform) and also runs half-hourly. Both stations get busy immediately after a match lets out, so allow extra time on the platform.

Bus services 19 and 19A run from Leeds city centre roughly every 15 minutes, stopping at York Street, Kirkgate, Duncan Street and Leeds railway station en route. Service 56 runs from Eastgate and Albion Street every 10 minutes.

For cricket, Yorkshire CCC's own guidance sets out Car Park J on St Michael's Lane for pre-purchased Blue Badge parking, and Car Park K at Elida Gibbs Park (Stanmore Crescent, LS4 2RS) for pre-purchased non-Blue Badge parking, with a shuttle buggy to Gate B. The sole park-and-stride facility on major cricket matchdays is Cinder Moor on Woodhouse Lane (LS6 2UZ), a roughly 20-minute walk to the St Michael's Lane entrance with frequent bus links.

Weather and Rain Delays

Cricket is the one sport at Headingley where weather can rewrite the day's traffic entirely. A rain delay or an early stumps call can send thousands of spectators back onto Kirkstall Lane and the A660 corridor hours ahead of the scheduled close of play, compressing what would normally be a spread-out departure into a single sudden surge. Rugby league matches at AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium proceed in most weather short of a genuine safety issue, so their traffic timing is far more predictable session to session.
