The Mersey Tunnels

The two Mersey road tunnels are the single most important feature of Liverpool driving. The Queensway Tunnel connects the city to Birkenhead and carries roughly 35,000 vehicles a day; the Kingsway Tunnel connects to Wallasey, carries around 45,000 a day, and feeds directly into the M53 for the wider Wirral. Together they handle more than 70,000 journeys daily, and because there is no free road alternative short of a long detour via the M6 and Runcorn, they are chronic bottlenecks at peak times. The A561 corridor and the southern approaches are the feeds to watch for airport runs, particularly at peak departure and arrival times.

Liverpool has a temperate maritime climate, which in practice means frequent rain (around 820 mm a year across roughly 150 rain-days) and prevailing southwesterly winds off the Irish Sea. Wet roads and reduced visibility are common year-round, and autumn and winter can bring gales that make the exposed dock roads and tunnel approaches gusty.
