Live Cameras Around Madison Square Garden
Monitor real-time traffic on Seventh and Eighth Avenues, 31st through 34th Streets, and the Midtown Manhattan approaches before a Knicks game, a Rangers game, a fight, or a concert. MSG sits directly on top of the busiest transportation facility in the Western Hemisphere — the cameras show you what that looks like from street level. Free 24/7.
VIEW MSG CAMERAS →Madison Square Garden opened on 11 February 1968 as the fourth building to carry the name, and it has been home to the Knicks and Rangers ever since. Concert capacity (around 22,000) actually exceeds basketball capacity (19,812) — unusual, and a hint at how much of MSG's identity is music rather than sport.
The defining fact about getting here has nothing to do with roads. MSG was built directly on top of Penn Station's active railroad platforms. Penn Station handles more than 600,000 passengers per weekday and is the busiest transportation facility in the Western Hemisphere — exceeding the combined traffic of the region's three major airports. The arena sits above all of it.
TrafficVision aggregates live camera feeds from NYSDOT and 511NY covering Midtown Manhattan and the river crossings. All 1,800+ New York-area cameras are free to view, no account required.
Getting There Is a Rail Question, Not a Road Question
There is no meaningful driving story at MSG. There is a rail story, and it is enormous.
Directly beneath the arena:
- Amtrak — 14+ routes including Acela, the primary intercity gateway to Manhattan
- LIRR — 10 branches serving Long Island
- NJ Transit — 5 lines serving New Jersey
Subway at 34th Street-Penn Station:
- 1/2/3 (IRT Broadway-7th Avenue)
- A/C/E (IND 8th Avenue)
Nearby: B/D/F/M, N/Q/R/W, and PATH at 33rd Street. Buses M4, M7, M20, M34 SBS, Q32, and BxM2.
If you are coming from anywhere in the tri-state area, one of those gets you to the building without a car. That's the design — and increasingly, it's the controversy.
The Security Perimeter: What Actually Closes
For high-security events, NYPD establishes a secure zone at 4pm spanning West 30th to West 35th Streets between Sixth and Eighth Avenues.
Inside that perimeter:
- Seventh and Eighth Avenues close to vehicles and general pedestrian traffic
- Drop-offs inside the frozen zone are barred once the zone activates
- Rideshare and taxi pickups must be scheduled outside the perimeter — at West 29th Street or West 36th Street. Fans exiting onto 7th or 8th Avenue are directed north to 36th or south to 29th.
One practical tip from the same guidance: rail and subway riders are urged to use the Moynihan Train Hall entrances on the west side of 8th Avenue at 31st and 33rd Streets to bypass the perimeter entirely.

VIEW LIVE CAMS →The Permit Fight — MSG's Right to Operate Is Time-Limited
This is a genuinely unusual thing to be able to say about a major arena: Madison Square Garden requires a city special permit to operate, and the current one expires in 2028.
The story:
- April 2023 — Manhattan Community Board 5 voted to deny indefinite renewal, instead recommending a three-year relocation deadline. Board chair Layla Law-Gisiko: "The issue with Madison Square Garden here is that it is really a true impediment to Penn Station." CB5 estimated relocation at roughly $8.6 billion.
- June 2023 — a report by the transit agencies found MSG "impede[s] the safe and efficient movement of passengers." CB5's resolution separately cited MSG's loading zones interfering with pedestrian and street traffic.
- MSG's response — "The special permit process is not about whether Madison Square Garden should move, and we have no plans to do so."
- September 2023 — City Council voted unanimously to grant a five-year permit, the shortest ever granted to the Garden. Council Member Erik Bottcher framed it as setting "a clock that will help bring all the stakeholders to the table to fix Penn Station now." James Dolan had sought a permit in perpetuity.
- As of May 2026 — Amtrak's Penn Station redevelopment plan allows MSG to remain at its current location.
So the "MSG must move" push appears, for now, to have lost. But the clock is still running.
There's a historical irony worth noting: MSG's construction required demolishing the original 1910 Penn Station — an act of destruction so notorious that it directly led to the creation of New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission.

BUILD YOUR ROUTE →The Billy Joel Residency
MSG's monthly Billy Joel residency began in January 2014 and closed on 25 July 2024 — his 104th consecutive residency performance and 150th lifetime MSG concert, all sellouts. Axl Rose and Jimmy Fallon guested on the final night.
Banners hang in the rafters for both records: most consecutive performances by any artist (104) and most lifetime performances by any artist (150). Ten and a half years of one artist selling out the same building every month is a real traffic pattern in its own right — and it's over.

Subway access is the 1/2/3 and A/C/E at 34th Street-Penn Station, with B/D/F/M, N/Q/R/W, and PATH at 33rd Street nearby. What streets close around MSG for big events?
For high-security events, NYPD establishes a secure zone at 4pm spanning West 30th to West 35th Streets between Sixth and Eighth Avenues. Seventh and Eighth Avenues close to vehicles and general pedestrian traffic inside that perimeter, and drop-offs inside the frozen zone are barred once it activates. Rideshare and taxi pickups must be scheduled outside the perimeter at West 29th Street or West 36th Street. Rail and subway riders can bypass the perimeter using the Moynihan Train Hall entrances on the west side of 8th Avenue at 31st and 33rd Streets.
Is Madison Square Garden going to move?
Its right to operate is genuinely time-limited, which is unusual for a major arena. MSG needs a city special permit to operate. In April 2023 Manhattan Community Board 5 recommended a three-year relocation deadline, and a June 2023 transit-agency report found MSG impedes the safe and efficient movement of Penn Station passengers. In September 2023 the City Council granted a five-year permit — the shortest ever given to the Garden — expiring in 2028. However, as of May 2026, Amtrak's Penn Station redevelopment plan allows MSG to remain where it is.
