The OVO Hydro opened on September 30, 2013 with a Rod Stewart concert and was designed by Foster + Partners in a sloping shape inspired by ancient Greek amphitheatres (Wikipedia). It carried the SSE Hydro name from opening until October 2021, when the sponsorship passed to OVO Energy. The arena is owned by Scottish Event Campus Limited and sits on the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) alongside the SEC Centre's exhibition halls and the SEC Armadillo, a separate 3,000-seat theatre also designed by Foster + Partners.

The venue has ranked among the world's busiest arenas by ticket sales since it opened, placing in Pollstar's global top 10 most years and eighth worldwide with 1,012,333 tickets sold in 2023 (Wikipedia). It hosted netball and gymnastics at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, and is scheduled to host ceremonies for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

A concert crowd behaves differently than a stadium crowd. There's no tailgating tradition at the Hydro — fans arrive in a compressed window rather than spread across an afternoon, and the exit surge concentrates entirely on rideshare and taxi queuing rather than a slow car-park drain.

• Doors to support act: Arrivals build steadily on the M8/Expressway approach and at Exhibition Centre station as fans filter in ahead of the headline set.
• Set time: Road traffic around the campus eases once the main act starts; most of the pressure shifts to the rail platform and bus stops as latecomers rush in.
• Encore to final bows: This is the tightest window. Exhibition Centre station "suffers badly from congestion at concerts as most of Greater Glasgow can be reached from the station" (Wikipedia), and the taxi rank by the Armadillo fills fast — a night without a fixed taxi plan often means a longer wait than the drive itself.
• 30-60 minutes post-show: Finnieston Street and the Clydeside Expressway westbound carry the heaviest exit load as the multi-storey car park empties in one wave.

Public Transport and Parking

The Hydro's dedicated rail stop is Exhibition Centre station, on the Argyle Line, with six trains an hour (roughly every 10 minutes) from Glasgow Central's low-level platform 17 — about a three-minute ride (Wikipedia; ScotRail). Glasgow Subway also serves the SEC area from the same station footprint. Long-term parking is in the multi-storey car park on Finnieston Street, reached by leaving the M8 at Junction 19, taking the Clydeside Expressway (A814) westbound, and following the signposted SEC East cut-off (SEC). The venue's own drop-off/pickup zone sits at the west of the SEC Centre, and a separate Glasgow Taxis rank operates next to the SEC Armadillo — though during the 2026 Commonwealth Games that taxi rank is unavailable, with alternative arrangements published on individual event pages (OVO Hydro).

The Hydro's calendar runs over 140 events a year, split mainly between touring concerts and comedy, with occasional sporting fixtures. Its arrival pattern for a major touring act is a single compressed pre-show wave rather than the hours-long build of an NFL tailgate, and its exit is dominated by transit and taxi demand rather than a car park drain. The venue has also hosted major sporting one-offs, including netball and gymnastics for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, both of which drew daytime crowds with a different arrival profile than an evening concert. Because nearly all Hydro shows run in the evening, check conditions and the approach roads together before you leave, especially in autumn and winter when darkness falls before doors.
