The San Diego Convention Center opened on the Harbor Drive waterfront in November 1989, designed by Arthur Erickson, then roughly doubled in size with a September 2001 expansion (Wikipedia). At 615,700 square feet of contiguous exhibit space across a building with room for 125,000 people, it is the anchor of downtown San Diego's convention business and, every July, the epicenter of Comic-Con International.

Comic-Con International: The Traffic Event of the Year

Comic-Con International is the reason most people search for this venue. The 2026 show runs Preview Night on Wednesday, July 22, followed by the main convention Thursday through Sunday, July 23-26, and is projected to draw more than 135,000 attendees, according to the San Diego Convention Center Corporation (Fox5 San Diego). The show is projected to generate more than $160 million in regional economic impact, over $95 million in direct hotel, restaurant, and attraction spending, and more than 61,000 hotel room-nights.

"Comic-Con has become an enduring part of our city's identity," said Mardeen Mattix, President and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation. "Each year, Comic-Con draws worldwide attention to San Diego, supports thousands of jobs, drives business throughout the region, and generates millions of dollars in hotel and sales tax revenue" (Fox5 San Diego).

Harbor Drive closes to all vehicle traffic between 1st Avenue and Park Boulevard for the 2026 show — Wednesday 2-10 p.m., Thursday through Saturday 7 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday 7 a.m.-8 p.m. — a joint closure run by the Convention Center, the City of San Diego, and the Port of San Diego (Comic-Con Harbor Drive advisory). Cars, bikes, scooters, and dockless devices are all barred from that stretch; only emergency and ADA-permitted vehicles pass through. A separate, longer-running squeeze sits just west of that closure: ongoing sewer construction has reduced Harbor Drive to one lane each way between Park Boulevard and Beardsley Street, with the project's next phase expected to finish in late 2026 (Visit San Diego).

Badge pickup happens in the Sails Pavilion on the Convention Center's upper level. For 2026 the pickup windows are Tuesday 1-5 p.m. (badges and pre-ordered items only, no programming yet), Wednesday noon-9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sunday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (Comic-Con badge pickup).

Getting There Without a Car

The Convention Center sits directly on the MTS Trolley network, with two stations within a block: Convention Center station at Harbor Drive and 1st Avenue, and Gaslamp Quarter station at Harbor Drive and 5th Avenue, both served by the Green Line (Comic-Con transportation guide). During Comic-Con, MTS runs Green Line trolleys between SDCCU Stadium and downtown roughly every 7 minutes for most of the day, with late-night service running past 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday (MTS).

Comic-Con also runs a free shuttle connecting Downtown, Mission Valley, and hotels near the airport in Shelter Island and Harbor Island, and the COASTER commuter train links Oceanside to downtown San Diego, terminating near the Santa Fe Depot, under a mile from the Convention Center (Comic-Con transportation guide). San Diego International Airport (SAN) is about 3 miles away, roughly a 15-minute drive under normal conditions.

Parking

The Convention Center's own underground garage holds 1,950 vehicles, entered from Harbor Drive, with 31 ADA-compliant stalls and elevator access, managed by ACE Parking (sandiego.org). A second, roughly 2,000-space structure sits across the street at Harbor Drive and 8th Avenue. The Convention Center does not publish standing year-round rates; during Comic-Con, nearby ACE Parking lots and garages have run $25-35 per hour (Fox5 San Diego). Given that range, the Trolley is the more predictable option on the busiest show days.

Beyond Comic-Con: A Year-Round Convention Calendar

Comic-Con is the biggest single week, but the Convention Center runs a full annual calendar. TwitchCon has a contract through 2028, the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting has returned repeatedly (most recently 2025), and the Esri International User Conference has been held here every year since 1997 (Wikipedia). The venue has also hosted the 1996 Republican National Convention and the 2014 Biotechnology Industry Organization convention, which alone was credited with a $56 million regional economic impact. Each of these shows produces its own smaller version of the same pattern: exhibitor load-in and load-out days that add truck traffic before and after the public event, badge-holder crowds concentrated at the Harbor Drive entrances, and downtown parking that fills earlier than a typical weekday.

Weather

San Diego is one of the mildest, driest big US cities, averaging about 10 inches of rain a year, almost all of it between December and April (Wikipedia: Climate of San Diego). The main seasonal quirk is the marine layer: "May Gray" and "June Gloom" bring low morning cloud and coastal fog that can sit over downtown and Harbor Drive into late morning.
