McCormick Place sits on Chicago's South Side lakefront and is the largest convention center in North America, with roughly 2.6 million square feet of exhibit space spread across four connected buildings: the Lakeside Center (rebuilt in 1971 after a 1967 fire destroyed the original complex), the North Building (1986), the South Building (1996), and the West Building (2007) (Wikipedia). It's owned and run by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA).

Chicago Auto Show and the Rest of the Calendar

The Chicago Auto Show is McCormick Place's best-known public event, running its 118th edition (the show dates to 1901) in February 2026 with roughly 1,000 vehicles on display. The 2025 show drew approximately 217,000 attendees (ABC7 Chicago). Beyond the Auto Show, the complex runs a packed year-round calendar including the International Home + Housewares Show in March and the National Restaurant Association Show in May.

Every one of these shows follows the same pattern: exhibitor load-in and load-out trucks on MLK Drive and the loading docks in the days before and after the public dates, badge-holder crowds concentrated at the Lake Shore Drive and I-55 approaches, and the Metra and CTA stations running near capacity on peak show days.

Getting There Without a Car

McCormick Place has its own dedicated Metra Electric Line station inside the South Building's Grand Concourse, about a 7-minute ride from Millennium Station downtown (Metra). The CTA Green Line's Cermak-McCormick Place station is roughly a half-mile walk to the West Building, and the #3 King Drive and #21 Cermak buses also serve the complex (McCormick Place transit guide).

Given how large the site is and how heavily it draws on both Metra and CTA, arriving by rail is generally the more predictable option on the biggest show days, when I-55 and Lake Shore Drive both see elevated volume around the interchange.

Parking

McCormick Place runs three on-site lots: Lot A (primary for North, South, and West Building events), Lot B, and Lot C (primary for Lakeside Center and Arie Crown Theater events), all ADA accessible and within walking distance of the complex. A prepaid guaranteed parking permit with in-and-out privileges runs $40 per day (McCormick Place driving directions). Getting There by Air

Midway Airport (MDW) is the closer of Chicago's two airports, and O'Hare (ORD) connects via the Dan Ryan and I-55. Both routes funnel through the same Lake Shore Drive/I-55 interchange that serves McCormick Place directly, so airport traffic and convention traffic often overlap on the busiest event days.
