The Schuyler County Sheriff's Office publishes a race-weekend traffic plan each year, according to Finger Lakes Daily News. County Route 16 runs one-way with three lanes of traffic from NY-414 to Gate 2, and two lanes from Townsend Road to Kuhl-Winner Way near Gate 6. That scheme only exists for the NASCAR weekend; on other event weekends the road reverts to normal two-way traffic.

The scale of the surge is the real story. The Village of Watkins Glen had a 2020 census population of 1,829, and estimates for NASCAR race weekend attendance run from around 100,000 on a single day to more than 200,000 across the full weekend, depending on which local source and which day is being counted. Either figure means a rural Finger Lakes village briefly hosts a crowd tens of times its own population, funneled through the same handful of two-lane roads that carry local traffic the rest of the year.

• County Route 16 is one-way on NASCAR Sundays. You cannot reverse your inbound route on the way out.

Camping: A Bigger Story Than Parking

Watkins Glen is a camping event as much as a race. The track's own Gate 1 camping area is the primary on-site option, and overnight parking, distinct from camping, is available for a fee on Kuhl-Winner Way at the top of Gate 6 during NASCAR weekend. Sleeping in a parked car elsewhere on the grounds still counts as camping under track rules, and overnight infield parking outside of designated areas is prohibited.

Off-site, Watkins Glen State Park opens two camping loops with roughly 100 electric sites specifically to coincide with the NASCAR weekend, moving up its usual season-opening schedule to meet fan demand. "NASCAR's rolling road trip is making an early stop in New York," said then-Acting Commissioner Kathy Moser when the early opening was announced, calling the park "ready to help welcome the action" (governor.ny.gov). Private campgrounds in the area, including the Watkins Glen/Corning KOA Resort, fill up alongside it. Because campers arrive across several days rather than in a single race-morning wave, the roads around the track carry elevated traffic well before the green flag, unlike the concentrated single-day surge that hits County Route 16 on race morning itself.

NASCAR Weekend vs. IMSA Weekend

The Glen hosts two distinct national racing weekends with different traffic profiles. The NASCAR weekend runs Cup, Xfinity (O'Reilly Auto Parts Series), and Craftsman Truck Series races across three days in May, drawing the largest crowds and the full County Route 16 one-way scheme described above. IMSA's WeatherTech SportsCar Championship returns in late June for the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen, a six-hour sports car endurance race on the longer 3.45-mile Grand Prix Circuit. IMSA weekends draw a smaller, more dedicated sports car audience than the NASCAR weekend, with a lighter traffic footprint on County Route 16 but a similar reliance on NY-414 as the main approach.

Weather in the Finger Lakes

Seneca Lake's microclimate moderates temperatures somewhat compared to inland New York, but spring race weekends can still bring cool mornings, wind off the lake, and rain, and a wet road course changes both the on-track action and how quickly fans disperse afterward.
